Community involvement is a major thrust
of the Rainy Lake Conservancy. The Conservancy participates in and supports local activities. Chamber of Commerce Home and Leisure Show The Rainy Lake Conservancy is a member of the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce, hosting a booth in its annual Home and Leisure Show in Fort Frances. Through this valuable contact, volunteers are able to educate residents on shoreline stewardship and responsible use of the lakes and forests in the watershed. A number of people have expressed interest in land protection options for their properties after talking with Conservancy members at the show. ManOMin Rainy River Watershed Conference Held in the Fort Frances/International Falls area, the ManOMin Watershed Conference brings together scientists, resource managers, First Nations representatives and organizers, and members of the general public who are interested in protecting and enhancing the health of the watershed. Representatives from the Rainy Lake Conservancy have attended the watershed conference since its inception; they have given a presentation at one of the sessions and also provided conservation materials.
Fort Frances MuseumThe Rainy Lake Conservancy works closely with the Fort Frances Museum. During Fort Frances' centennial year, for example, the museum featured a Rainy Lake Conservancy exhibit detailing the history of conservation in the area. The Rainy Lake Conservancy contributes to museum fund-raising efforts, and individual members donate art and photography for auctions. Rainy Lake Fisheries Charity Trust When discussions began in Fort Frances to create a fisheries trust, the Rainy Lake Conservancy offered support for this emerging group's commitment to sound, scientific research aimed at enhancing the long-term health of the Rainy Lake fishery. The Rainy Lake Fisheries Charity Trust was established as a charitable non-profit trust in 2005, assisted by Rainy Lake Conservancy start-up funds. A member of the Conservancy presently serves on the board of directors. Farmers' Market The Rainy Lake Conservancy participates in the Fort Frances Farmers' Market, providing materials on lakeshore stewardship, watershed information, water monitoring opportunities, and other conservation literature. |
